The World of Warcraft characters belong to two factions: the Alliance and the Horde. These two factions consist of five races each, plus the newest additions, the Blood Elves and the Draenei. Any player can pick from characters belonging to nine classes and 10 races.

The characters
WoW players create characters to act as their avatars on Azeroth. Depending on what you prefer, you can opt to become part of the Alliance and become a Human, a Night Elf, a Dwarf, a Gnome or a Draenei, although you'll need The Burning Crusade expansion to create the latter. As part of the Horde, you can choose to become an Orc, a Troll, a Tauren, an Undead or a Blood Elf. You'll also need The Burning Crusade expansion in order to create a Blood Elf.

There are two types of WoW characters: the PCs or playable characters and the NPCs or non-playable. NPCs will only interact with PCs during scripted events or through AI. But just because they're NPCs doesn’t mean they won't impact the game. NPCs can be friendly (green), but they can also be hostile (red), especially if they belong to the other faction. You'll also encounter neutral NPCs (yellow) – benign creatures who will attack if you annoy them.

The Classes
There are 9 different classes you can choose from, although these are limited to the type of race you pick. In no particular order, they are: Priest, Hunter, Druid, Mage, Rogue, Paladin, Warlock, Warrior and Shaman. Prior to The Burning Crusade expansion, the Shaman and Paladin classes were only available to the Horde and the Alliance, respectively. Now, Blood Elves can become Paladins and Draenei can become Shamans.

Customizing your character
There are plenty of options to customize the character of your choice. Other than the gender, race and class, you are also allowed to manipulate the character's skin color, hair style and face type. There are also other options, such as adding tusks, body and facial hair and piercings and other facial markings that certain races/classes/genders can get.

Unfortunately, your creativity in terms of how your WoW characters look like ends there. You can't make them taller, leaner or heavier. Blame it on the limitation imposed by today's animation technology. It is actually possible for WoW to allow you to do that, but you'll be irritated by the visual distortions, so they didn’t bother.

Reputation
Reputation will have a huge impact on the character you're playing. It simply represents your standing in the faction you belong to. Reputation will allow you to go on certain quests and will help determine your survival. If you haven’t got any, you won't get a lot of action.

Reputation also allows you to perform certain things, such as sell, buy and interact. Not only that, you could even get killed if your reputation isn’t enough. Some NPCs are programmed to kill you if your reputation cannot protect you. Conversely, they will be nice to you if you've won enough favor. Reputation is also limited to your faction. You can't obtain it from the opposing side.

Building your character
Part of what makes WoW addictive is that it allows you to build your character as you progress in the game. Aside from the set of skills available for all classes, you can also attain character levels as you kill, gain points and experience. You can increase your attribute stats, raise your proficiencies and build your strength. You also build stamina, reinforce your armor, use your talents and abilities and grow your character. Basically, the more you play, the better your character becomes.
