Common World of Warcraft FAQs
What is it?
The World of Warcraft or WoW, as you may know by now, is an MMORPG, also known as a massively multiplayer online role playing game. This is one of the largest online games available today. As of last count, there are about 8 million WoW players all over the world. At any one time, thousands of players can interact, regardless of where they are. The game world involved in this game is huge, allowing players to go on epic quests, slay monsters, form alliances or friendships and basically interact with other players.
As an MMORPG, the World of Warcraft allows players to co-exist in a highly dynamic virtual environment. The sheer size and magnitude of this game offers players a limitless number of goals to complete, whether they're playing on land or at sea.
What makes World of Warcraft special?
Aside from the fact that this is a game you can participate in at your own pace, the creators of WoW also regularly provide new content. Thanks to these updates, you can expect the unexpected: new creatures, items, locations and adventures. With a charismatic story line and even more captivating dynamics, WoW offers you a game you can play at a faster pace, allowing you to experience different things and events simultaneously. Lately, WoW welcomed the addition of The Burning Crusade, its very first expansion that offers more gaming and character possibilities.
Is it free?
No. The game's upkeep makes it too complicated and too costly to give away for free, although you can experience it at no cost for the first month. After that, you'll need to buy a subscription to continue playing. There are three types of subscription you can choose from: $14.99 monthly, $41.97 quarterly and $83.94 semi-annual subscription. Currently, you can pay using prepaid game cards and credit cards only.
How is the game played?
Treat the World of Warcraft as a journey and it'll be a lot easier to understand. As a WoW player, you enter the virtual world of Azeroth. If you've played Warcraft: Orcs and Humans before, you must have seen how it looks like. To do that, you must first build your online avatar.
As a WoW character, you get to choose whether you want to fight as part of the Alliance or the Horde. Once you've decided which faction to fight for, you can decide on how your character will look like. WoW allows you to build your character by choosing among the different classes and races available. Once that is done, you interact with other players and go on epic quests.
Since you can only belong to one faction, there are certain behavior limitations once you've made your choice. For example, you may battle with the opposing faction but you can only talk, befriend and form groups with fellow faction members. There are also certain quests that you can only complete as a member of that faction. Plus, you get to interact with NPCs (non-playable characters) who may be nice, nasty or neutral, depending on who you are.
As for the how-to of the game, it basically is a journey, as mentioned earlier. If you did not choose to become a troll or a gnome, you begin on a unique starting position. You'll get a brief introduction to your race, after which you can begin your travels. Expect to meet your first monster encounter not too long in the game, along with a host of other creatures and yes, players.
Does it ever end?
Depending on your interest and willingness, you can play WoW for several hours or even weeks at a time, since some quests take longer to complete than others. Expect to put in thousands of hours to go on a virtual adventure as someone else. When there are too many things you can do, would you even want the game to end?
