Digital Protection: Armor in the World of Warcraft
Playing one of the world’s most popular massively multiplayer online role playing games, World of Warcraft, is like casting away the real world to get involved in another. World of Warcraft occurs in a digital world where everything is easier to get, and where over eight million other players work to survive and go forward. This MMORPG can allow players to share their bounties, trade their items, fight against monsters or fellow players, and even make a living. Even more intrepid players can cast spells, throw curses, disable enemies, hunt down targets, steal, kill, and assassinate. The possibilities are endless, and the game is rightfully addictive.
The fourth installment in the widely popular Warcraft series, World of Warcraft happens four years after the Frozen Throne, the previous installment. In World of Warcraft, players can assume a virtual identity by choosing from nine different classes. There are the warriors, who function in battle and make their living fighting. There are the druids, who heal, do magic, and shift shapes. There are the wise mages who control politics in World of Warcraft. There are warlocks, the mages steeped too deep in dark magic. There are priests who heal, as well as hunters who fight and watch over the World of Warcraft’s animals. There are paladins who fight against the undead and defend the weak, rogues that steal and work as assassins, and shamans who cast spells with the help of nature spirits.
World of Warcraft’s characters each have their own special armor, which can also spell the special advantages some classes have over others. Druids have a good stock of spells under their belts, and can change their shapes to elude enemies. Because they have to move fast and change shape quickly, they are limited to wearing cloth and leather armor, a great disadvantage if they meet up with enemies who have stronger armor and greater resistance to druidic magic. Hunters are also limited to cloth and leather armor, as they must move fast in fighting, but at higher levels, they can take on mail and strengthen their outer armor.
Like druids, mages have spells and their own wits at their disposal. They can control weather conditions and change entire storms to fit their needs, but mages can only wear cloth and no greater armor. Paladins, on the other hand, with their functions as defenders and fighters, can have the basic cloth and leather, but have the ability to wear mail as well. At much higher levels, the ax and sword-wielding paladins can also wear plate armor, making them even less susceptible to enemy attack.
Priests can heal their fellow players and give many a dying race a chance to get back and keep playing. However, they can wear only cloth as armor. Also limited to cloth, although with the leather advantage, are the stealing and thieving rogues. Rogues are perhaps the sneakiest class in World of Warcraft, and as such, need to move rapidly. Although they have very little to defend themselves, rogues can assume stealth mode and move about invisibly.
Unlike the rest of the spell-casters, shamans can take on cloth, leather, and mail at much higher levels. This makes them one of the most versatile classes in World of Warcraft. The evil warlocks, on the other hand, can wear only cloth, but can hold far greater powers and even summon demons to their aid. Perhaps the strongest and most impenetrable, warriors can use cloth, leather, and mail, and plate at higher levels in keeping with their duties as fighters.
With all these options, along with the other advantages offered by World of Warcraft, it is easy to see why the game has branched out into the board game and trading card game arenas. As more installments follow, it will not be surprising to see even more players taking on each other and marching into battle, thanks to innovations in the universe covered by World of Warcraft.
