Having Some Fun with a Little Bit of Bad: The Warlock in the World of Warcraft
When the World of Warcraft was first released a few years ago, players started flocking to it and building its popularity. Their excitement was understandable: after all, the Warcraft universe had been around for what seemed like ages, and the new massively multiplayer online role playing game was giving players even more classes, options, and sources of interest to choose from. The fourth installment in the Warcraft series, World of Warcraft now boasts of being the world’s most popular subscription-based MMORPG.
Over eight million people all over the globe enjoy the World of Warcraft, and spend most of their waking hours playing, fighting, trading items, and in general, having fun in a virtual domain doing things that would otherwise entail so much more than mouse clicks in the real world. The World of Warcraft also allows players to assume virtual identities, an inviting prospect for many people who are not as courageous at taking chances minus their computers and Internet connections. The universe of the World of Warcraft is also benign and static; unlike the real world, the World of Warcraft is a little more predictable, and a little easier to control.
The World of Warcraft’s popularity has prompted manufacturers to branch out into board and trading card games, but the MMORPG remains as the most popular of the World of Warcraft lot. In the MMORPG, players can win points and increase the levels of their skills, thanks to experiences in questing or fighting. Succeed on a quest, and you can find yourself going up the ranks in World of Warcraft. Meet up with an assassin or get into an especially brutal fight, and you can find yourself wasting away slowly in real time.
Fighting monsters and winning wars in World of Warcraft requires that characters explore the terrain of the Warcraft universe, engage in trades and earn money, obey the orders of computer-controlled characters and fulfill obligatory missions, and win awards for all their efforts at thriving and succeeding. Players are then paid virtual money, given extra experience points, and allowed to go on even more difficult quests and battles than before. In some cases, players can also be given new items that can help them explore the World of Warcraft, open hitherto locked doors, or fulfill hitherto impossible missions.
It is this reward system that has made World of Warcraft highly addictive for gaming enthusiasts. World of Warcraft players can find themselves so ingrained into their virtual characters that they can lose track of time and reality in their excitement. The wide selection of characters can also make World of Warcraft attractive to new players.
To engage in World of Warcraft, you will need to choose among nine classes of characters to represent you. Warriors specialize in battles and fights, druids are shape shifters that can perform magic spells, mages are wise wizards that influence politics in World of Warcraft, priests can heal, hunters fight and guard animals, paladins defend the oppressed, rogues steal and assassinate, and shamans use the powers of nature to help fellow players.
Warlocks are considered corrupted mages who have gone past the point of recovery in dark magic. According to Warcraft lore, warlocks can consort with demons and live on the edges of the universe, whether they are of the race of gnomes, orcs, undead, blood elves, or humans. Warlocks can inflict damage with their spells, using the help of demons such as succubi, voidwalkers, imps, and felhunters.
Warlocks can fight with staves, swords, wands, or daggers, but can operate only in cloth, and no other armor. With their abilities in demonology, affliction, and destruction, warlocks are tolerated, but never trusted in the World of Warcraft universe. They have the ability to steal players’ souls, make damaging curses, and add magic and intrigue to this interesting, popular MMORPG.
