The World of Warcraft is populary known as WoW. It is a pay to play online role playing game produced byBlizzard Entertainment. It was first introduced in 1994 as Warcraft: Orcs and Humans. The World of Warcraft takes place in the Azeroth, four years after Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne.

The game quickly became a financial success and is now the world’s most popular subscription based online-gaming RPG. There are 8.5 million gamers worldwide, 2 million players within North America, 1.5 million players within Europe and 3.5 million players within China. World of Warcraft has won countless awards and recognitions, particularly Gamespot’s Game of the Year in 2004.

Riding the bandwagon, there is the World of Warcraft Board Game as well as the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game. Earlier this year, The Burning Crusade was released. It is the first official expansion pack of the World of Warcraft.

The difference between the previous Warcraft Series and the World of Warcraft is that the latter is not a real-time strategy game. It is an online RPG like EverQuest. Online RPGs allow the players to control characters in a gameworld. They can explore the landscape, fight monsters and perform quests – be it individually or as a group.

The gamers gets reqards in the form of items, money and experience points. This lets the players improve their character’s power and skill. Also, players may join battles agains other players – in the form of duels or fights.

The majority of the games quests take place in the early and the middle stages of the whole game. It can be completed even without the assitance of other World of Warcraft players, specifically when the player already has a high level than the quest requires.

There are portions of the games called the Dungeons which are made to let other gamers work together as a team to succeed. Dungeons are for parties with two to five players. There is a maximum of 40 for the difficult ‘raiding’ type.
The World of Warcraft makes use of server clusters called ‘realm’ in order to let the player choose what kind of gameplay they prefer. It also depends on how many subscribers the realm they choose supports. Gamers may control up to ten characters in each realm with a maximum of 50 characters for each account.

There are four kinds of realms:
1. Normal which is also known the PvE or the Player versus Environment
2. PvP or the Player versus Player
3. RP or the roleplaying which is hooked to the Normal and the Player versus Environment server
4. The RP and the PvP or the roleplaying which is hooked on the Player versus Player server.

The latter two realms apply the roleplaying rules. Gamers can be penalized if they do not roleplay.

The characters in the World of Warcraft are tied to the user accounts of a specific gamer. Use accounts can be attained on all the realms or the servers. Characters can be moved by their gamers between servers from one region to another. But it is important to note that one can transfer from one European server to another European server but not from one European server to an American server. It comes with a fee though.

Players also have the liberty to make their own characters which would serve as their avatars while they are in the online world of Azeroth. This makes the whole gaming experience exciting because it’s like they are really part of the World of Warcraft. Wow!
